Nejma has one passion in life. Existence in the deep French countryside can be exhilarating when you love bulls and the local sport of ripping the tassel off an animal's head in groups. Having almost nothing to do with the corrida, the sport relies on agility and an understanding of the psyche of the majestic animals, with whom Nejma is able to form a deep relationship. The male-dominated sport, however, requires the young heroine to enter a world brimming with testosterone, patriarchal masculinity, blood and adrenaline.

Nothing good can come from this collision, and „Animal” as a result quickly becomes a surprising and gripping combination of feminist revenge film and carnal cinema. „Animal” by Emma Benestan convinces that European cinema is capable of an excellent screen marriage of these two genres. According to some critics, Benestan's talent allows her to be placed in one line with Julia Ducournau („Meat,” „Titane,” „Alpha”) and Coralie Fargeat („Substance”).
